The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has revealed why the immediate past Governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano was arrested.
It was reported that the former governor was arrested on Thursday night, at the Lagos International Airport by the anti-graft agency on his way out of the country.
Obiano's arrest came just a few hours after he handed over power to the new Governor of the State, Chukwuma Charles Soludo.
The Public Relations Officer of EFCC, Wilson Uwajaren confirmed the arrest while speaking with BBC Pidgin.
The commission’s spokesman, Uwajaren revealed that Obiano had been on the watchlist of the EFCC prior to the transition of power on Thursday.
“Obiano has been on our watchlist for some time now. He had immunity as a governor and that is why we could not arrest him before now." He said.
He added that his arrest becomes possible because he has lost the immunity that covered him.
“Today he lost the immunity and was travelling out of the country before we finally arrested him”.
