The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Commissioner of Police, Bennett Igweh, has urged residents and locals to refrain from participating in the planned nationwide protest. Some groups and citizens had organized a protest for August 1 to express their dissatisfaction with the country's economic situation.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Monday, Commissioner Igweh asked the residents to avoid the protest. He emphasized that the police have been working hard to maintain security in the FCT, and any protest could undermine these efforts.
"I specifically appeal to the residents and natives of the FCT. Lions do not destroy their own dens. You cannot see a lion destroying its own home. Therefore, I urge you not to join this protest. We have worked tirelessly to ensure your safety," Igweh said.
He elaborated on the police efforts, stating, "We have been combating criminal elements in areas surrounding Abuja, such as Kaduna, Nasarawa, and Niger, to ensure your safety. This effort has come at a great cost. Just last week, we lost two officers in Gidango, and recently, we lost two more. Let our sacrifices count. I plead with you."
The Commissioner highlighted the potential risks of street protests, warning, "We don't want a situation where someone tests the police's strength or incites violence. Please, don't destroy your home. Avoid the streets."
Igweh also pointed out the government's efforts to improve infrastructure in the FCT. "The government has been providing good roads, whether through the FCT Minister or the President. You can see the improvements from Wuse to other areas, even in remote parts of the FCT."
He stressed that any damage caused by miscreants during the protests would set back the progress made. "We don't want outsiders coming in to destroy what has been built. We would return to where we started. Please, I beg you, do not join this protest."
He appealed to the residents to help keep the capital safe by staying away from the protests. "Let's work together to keep the FCT secure. Let those who want to protest do so elsewhere, not here. Act maturely and show appreciation for the sacrifices made to ensure your safety."
Igweh concluded by asking for the community's cooperation and understanding, saying, "If you appreciate our efforts and avoid this protest, we will continue to provide security for you. Thank you, and God bless all of you."
