A man was arrested for climbing the Eiffel Tower on Sunday, just hours before the Olympics closing ceremony, according to Paris police. The man was spotted scaling the tower at around 2:45 PM local time, and police quickly intervened to arrest him. Details about his motivation and nationality were not immediately available.
Videos shared on social media show the man, shirtless, climbing just above the Olympic rings that have decorated the tower during the summer games. Another video shows him being led away by police with his hands cuffed behind his back, saying to a bystander, "Bloody warm, innit?"
Reports indicate that French police evacuated the area around the Eiffel Tower during the incident, with some sources suggesting that the tower itself was also evacuated. However, the BBC could not independently confirm whether the evacuation was still in place as of 4:00 PM.
The Eiffel Tower was a major part of the grand opening ceremony of the Olympics, but it was not planned to play a role in the closing ceremony later that day.
