The Federal Government has received 70 hybrid Jet Mover buses from Jet Motor Company to boost the nation’s transportation system. This Nigerian automobile manufacturer shared the update with The PUNCH on Monday.
These buses are powered by compressed natural gas (CNG) and premium motor spirit (petrol), aiming to provide Nigerians with affordable and comfortable transport options. Dimas Hamidu, the Technical Assistant to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, praised the quality of the buses and commended Jet Motor Company for their work. He emphasized that these hybrid vehicles represent President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s efforts to ease the hardships caused by the removal of fuel subsidies. Hamidu expressed confidence that the buses will help address the transportation needs of Nigerians while softening the economic impact of rising costs.
Hamidu further noted, “I am pleased with what I have seen today. These buses will significantly help reduce the pain and difficulties the public is experiencing due to the fuel subsidy removal.” He also shared that he had previously visited the plant with the Minister of Finance, who personally tested one of the buses and was impressed with its performance.
He added that the Federal Government has awarded contracts to various companies to produce CNG vehicles in different quantities. Given rising public concern about when these vehicles would be visible on the roads, the Ministry of Finance decided to inspect the manufacturing plants to assess progress. Hamidu commended Jet Motor Company for adhering to the contract terms and delivering the vehicles as specified.
He expressed optimism that more of these buses will be delivered soon, helping to ease the country’s transportation issues and support citizens facing economic challenges.
The Managing Director of Jet Motor Company, Derek Ewelukwa, expressed gratitude to the government for allowing his company to contribute to enhancing transportation for Nigerians. He explained that each hybrid vehicle is equipped with two CNG tanks, holding a total of 220 litres of gas, which allows the buses to travel 300 kilometres. Additionally, the petrol tank has a capacity of 80 litres. Ewelukwa noted that the CNG tanks have a lifespan of 15 years, and the engine seamlessly switches between gas and petrol, providing efficient operation.
