The Gombe State Commissioner of Health, Dr. Habu Dahiru, has announced that the state’s Public Health Emergency Operations Centre is on high alert due to confirmed and suspected cases of diphtheria in Herwagana Ward, Gombe.
Diphtheria, caused by the bacteria Corynebacterium diphtheriae, is a serious disease that can be prevented by vaccination. It mainly affects the throat and respiratory system and can be fatal if not treated promptly.
Dr. Dahiru revealed that the state has identified three suspected cases and one confirmed case of diphtheria. He emphasized that vaccines are readily available at Primary Health Centres across Gombe State, particularly for children, and urged parents and guardians to ensure their children are vaccinated. This is crucial in protecting them from this potentially deadly disease.
The commissioner also stressed the importance of raising awareness and taking proactive steps to prevent the spread of diphtheria in the affected areas. He highlighted that the confirmed case involved a child who had not received the necessary immunization against diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus. These three diseases can be prevented through the pentavalent vaccine, which is given in three doses to protect children from several serious illnesses.
Dr. Dahiru's call for vaccination and awareness aims to safeguard the health of the community and prevent further cases of diphtheria in the state.
