Lagos Gas Explosion Leaves Many Injured, Destroys Vehicles

A fire broke out at a Mobil Oil Company filling station near the Airport Hotel in Ikeja due to a gas explosion. The explosion happened around 10:49 am on Thursday, August 8, when a gas tanker was unloading its contents into a storage tank, which then ignited.

The fire has since been brought under control. The incident caused panic among people in the area, leading them to flee for safety.

Eyewitnesses and emergency officials on the scene reported that while no lives were lost, many people were injured. Some of the injured were taken to hospitals in private vehicles and minibusses before ambulances arrived.

Jubril Gawat, the Senior Special Assistant to the state governor, confirmed on his social media account that the fire had been extinguished.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service provided more details, stating that the fire involved a gas truck at the filling station and spread quickly, engulfing eight vehicles, including the tanker, and affecting part of a nearby two-story building. Several injured individuals were taken to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) for treatment. The exact number of injuries is still being determined.
