President Bola Tinubu and President Teodoro Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea have formalized an agreement on the Gulf of Guinea Gas Pipeline Project, strengthening the partnership between their nations for mutual benefit.
The agreement, signed on Wednesday evening in Malabo, covers legislative and regulatory aspects of the pipeline, including its establishment, operation, natural gas transit, ownership, and general principles. Chief Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Media and Publicity, announced the agreement on Thursday.
During his three-day official visit to Equatorial Guinea, President Tinubu noted that the agreement would create new opportunities for gas exploration and employment. He highlighted discussions on employment creation, food security, multilateral relations, and conflict resolution in Africa.
"We discussed various conflicts and strategies for promoting peace and stability in our countries and across the continent," Tinubu said. He emphasized the need for African nations to address challenges like inadequate capital and industrialization through internal solutions rather than external interventions.
Tinubu also touched on security issues, the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), and food security, stressing a collaborative approach within Africa to tackle these challenges.
President Mbasogo praised the long-standing bilateral relationship with Nigeria and underscored the importance of deepening cooperation in key areas. He also supported Africa's goal of securing a permanent seat on the UN Security Council and affirmed Equatorial Guinea's commitment to working with Nigeria towards this objective.
The agreement was signed by Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, Nigeria's Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Simeon Esono, Equatorial Guinea's Minister of Foreign Affairs. The signing was witnessed by Chief Lateef Fagbemi, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Alhaji Muhammad Abubakar, Minister of Defence, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Minister of Interior, Mr. Ekperikpe Ekpo, Minister of State for Petroleum and Gas, and Dr. Jamila Ibrahim-Bio, Minister of Youth Development.
