Akwa Ibom Receives 30,000 Bags of Maize and Garri from NEMA

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has handed over 24,180 bags of 50kg maize and 5,828 bags of 25kg garri to the Akwa Ibom State Government for distribution to vulnerable residents.

NEMA's Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, announced this during the handover in Uyo on Wednesday. Represented by the state’s Head of Operations, Mrs. Mmandu Aisueni, Umar said the gesture fulfills President Bola Tinubu's promise to ease the economic hardships in the country.

She explained that the food items would be distributed through committees in each local government area (LGA), consisting of council chairpersons, the State Emergency Management Agency, traditional rulers, and others.

Umar further directed that 20% of each LGA's allocation be given to religious organizations (JNI & CAN), and 3% to boarding schools. She emphasized that each LGA would receive an equal share of the food items.

"The President approved the release of 42,000 MT of assorted food commodities from the National Strategic Reserve under the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security. These include maize, millet, sorghum, and garri," Umar said.

She added that Akwa Ibom has been allocated 1,209 MT of maize (24,180 bags) and 145.1 MT of garri (5,828 bags).

Dr. Offiong Offor, Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, who received the items on behalf of the state, thanked President Tinubu for the intervention. She assured that the state government would ensure the food reaches the intended beneficiaries.
