Army Chief Worried About Drug Abuse Among Soldiers Fighting Terrorists

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, has raised concerns about the increasing cases of drug abuse among soldiers deployed in various operations against terrorists. He spoke on Tuesday during a one-day seminar in Sokoto, which focused on strengthening the military’s warrior ethos to improve effectiveness in battle.


The seminar, organized by the Department of Army Transformation and Innovation, aimed to address key issues like drug abuse among soldiers and the overall combat readiness of troops. Lagbaja, who was represented by Brig. Gen. Ibikunle Ajose, acting General Officer Commanding of 8 Division, expressed hope that the event would help tackle the problem of substance abuse.

Lagbaja assured soldiers fighting in Operation Hadarin Daji in Sokoto State that they would continue receiving the necessary support, including logistics and guidance, to carry out their missions successfully.


He said, "I will continue to support you with the needed logistics and guidance to help you succeed in your tasks. The Nigerian Army is constantly updating its strategies to overcome these challenges."


Lagbaja also emphasized that drug and substance abuse among soldiers had become a serious issue, which needs to be addressed to improve their combat performance. He called on military commanders at all levels to come up with creative solutions to manage their troops effectively and enhance their battle readiness.


The Chief of Transformation and Innovation, Maj. Gen. Zakari Abubakar, also spoke at the seminar, pledging continued efforts to improve leadership and tackle drug abuse among soldiers.
