ASUU Threatens Strike, Gives Federal Government 14-Day Ultimatum

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has given the Federal Government a 14-day deadline to resolve ongoing issues or face the possibility of another strike.

ASUU is demanding the completion of the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement based on the 2021 draft by the Nimi Briggs Committee. They are also asking for the release of salaries withheld during the 2022 strike.

In a statement on Wednesday, ASUU President Emmanuel Osodeke expressed frustration over the government's lack of commitment, accusing it of delaying actions that are worsening the crisis in public universities.

ASUU warned, "We give the Nigerian Government another 14 days, starting from Monday, September 23, 2024, to address these issues. If nothing is done, the union should not be blamed for any industrial action."

The union’s demands also include the release of unpaid salaries for staff on sabbatical, part-time, and adjunct positions affected by the government's payroll system. They are also asking for funding for public university revitalization, the payment of Earned Academic Allowances, and the reversal of decisions on university governing councils.

ASUU is also pushing for the adoption of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) to replace the current payroll system (IPPIS).
