The Zamfara State Government has confirmed that 40 people have died in a boat accident in Gummi Local Government Area.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the boat, which was carrying more than 40 people, capsized on Sunday in the Bakin Kasuwa River in Uban Dawaki community.
Sulaiman Idris, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Publicity, confirmed the incident and said the governor called it a huge tragedy.
“We have received the sad news of a boat accident in Bakin Kasuwa River, Uban Dawaki, Gummi Local Government Area, which caused the loss of over 40 lives."
The governor has ordered the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to begin rescue operations and recover the bodies. He also instructed the agency to assess the situation and provide help as quickly as possible.
The governor further directed the Commissioner for Humanitarian and Relief Matters to provide immediate relief materials to the victims and their families.
