DSS Denies Unlawful Raid on SERAP Office, Says It Was a Routine Investigation

The Department of State Services (DSS) has refuted claims that its operatives unlawfully invaded the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) office in Abuja.

On Monday, SERAP alleged that DSS agents were “unlawfully occupying” its office and had demanded to meet with its directors. The organization called on President Bola Tinubu to direct the DSS to cease its alleged harassment and intimidation of Nigerian citizens.

However, in a statement released on Tuesday, the DSS clarified that its operatives were lawfully conducting a routine investigation at SERAP’s office. The agency stated that the incident had been misinterpreted, leading to a flood of inquiries.

“This narrative is inaccurate and misleading in its intent,” the DSS said in the statement.

“For the record, a team of two unarmed DSS operatives were legally dispatched to SERAP’s office in Abuja as part of a routine investigation. Unfortunately, this has been misrepresented as an unlawful act of harassment and intimidation.”

The DSS emphasized that such inquiries are a standard part of its operations and do not constitute an illegal raid or intimidation. The agency assured the public that it remains committed to professionalism and national security and urged citizens to disregard any "false narratives."

The DSS also reiterated its dedication to carrying out its duties with integrity, promising to investigate any malicious reports related to the incident.
