Senator Monday Okpebholo |
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the results of the recent governorship election in Edo State, where All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Senator Monday Okpebholo was declared the winner. Okpebholo secured 291,667 votes, defeating PDP's candidate Asue Ighodalo, who got 247,274 votes, and Labour Party's Olumide Akpata, who received 22,763 votes.
Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State, who chaired the Edo State Governorship Election Campaign for the PDP, accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of violating electoral laws. He claimed that Ighodalo had been in the lead based on polling unit results but alleged that APC manipulated the final results in collaboration with some INEC officials.
The PDP, in a statement, said it stands by its own results, which showed Ighodalo as the rightful winner. They also accused the APC of altering figures in 10 local government areas to claim victory.
PDP youths protested at INEC's office, accusing the commission of tampering with results. Despite being stopped by security forces, the youths demanded that INEC recount the votes. The PDP leadership has indicated that they may pursue legal action to challenge the outcome of the election. Meanwhile, APC officials expressed satisfaction with the election results, dismissing PDP's claims as baseless.
