Eguavoen Debunks Resignation Rumors: 'I’m Still in Charge of Super Eagles'

Austin Eguavoen

Super Eagles interim head coach, Austin Eguavoen, has refuted claims that he has resigned from his position, confirming he remains in charge of the national team.

Speaking to reporters at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport in Abuja on Wednesday, Eguavoen addressed rumors suggesting he had stepped down from his role after leading the team in their first two 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda.

Eguavoen clarified that his comments about meeting with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) hierarchy were misunderstood. He explained that his plan was to discuss the next steps for the team following the two qualifiers, but he never indicated an intention to resign.

"It's unfortunate that people misinterpret things. I only spoke about having a discussion with the NFF after these games to determine how to proceed with future matches," Eguavoen said. "I’m still the Technical Director of the NFF, responsible for the Super Eagles, and I remain in charge at this moment."

Eguavoen was appointed interim coach in August after the NFF's deal with German coach Bruno Labbadia fell through. In his initial stint, he led the team to a 3-0 victory over Benin Republic and a goalless draw against Rwanda.

He emphasized the need to avoid false stories that could distract the team as they prepare for upcoming challenges.
