Governor Dikko Radda |
Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina state has revealed that only 32 police officers are responsible for patrolling one local government area (LGA) with over 200 villages.
Speaking in an interview with DW Hausa, Radda highlighted the security challenges in the LGA, which consists of 10 wards. He disclosed that out of the 32 officers, only nine guns are available, with just five in working condition.
"Currently in Katsina, there is an LGA with 39 policemen and nine guns, of which only five are functional. This LGA has 10 wards and more than 200 villages. How can 39 officers protect such a large area?" Radda said.
To address the security crisis, Radda mentioned that the government is offering support and training to communities willing to defend themselves while awaiting security forces.
Katsina has been plagued by bandit attacks. In February, bandits killed Sanusi Hassan, commander of the Katsina Community Watch Corps, along with seven watchmen and other residents in Kankara LGA. Other incidents, including killings and abductions, have occurred in Faskari, Kankara, and Safana LGAs, heightening insecurity across the state.
