The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reported that more men are being infected with Mpox in Nigeria.
According to data shared by the NCDC on Monday, 67% of Mpox cases recorded since January 2024 have been in males.
The NCDC stated, “Men account for around 70% of the 6,001 suspected and confirmed Mpox cases reported in Nigeria since September 2017, when the first confirmed cases were recorded.”
The report also showed that 1,031 suspected cases have been reported across 47 local government areas in 23 states and the Federal Capital Territory. Of these, 67 cases have been confirmed in 2024.
The data revealed that children under five years old are the most affected group, followed by those in the 26-30 and 46-50 age ranges.
Although there have been no deaths from Mpox in 2024, the NCDC noted that two deaths occurred in 2022 and seven in 2023.
Mpox, also known as monkeypox, is an infectious disease caused by the monkeypox virus. It can cause a rash, swollen lymph nodes, and fever, and is spread through close contact, respiratory droplets, and contaminated objects.
To help control the spread, Nigeria recently received 10,000 doses of the Jynneos Mpox vaccine from the U.S.
