NYSC Director Calls for Skill Training in Nigerian Defence Academy Curriculum

Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has recommended that the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) include skill acquisition and entrepreneurship programs in its curriculum.

Ahmed made this suggestion during the 22nd Convocation Lecture of the NDA on Tuesday in Kaduna, addressing the graduating cadets of the 71 Regular Course and Post-Graduate students.

He explained that incorporating skill training, such as agriculture, would not only promote land use but also equip cadets with practical skills for self-sufficiency. "The large land at the NDA should be used for agricultural production, giving cadets valuable skills for life after their training," Ahmed said.

He also urged the NDA’s Post-Graduate School to introduce skill acquisition programs to enhance students' employability and self-reliance. Ahmed emphasized that skills training is important for national security, noting that "when people are engaged in productive activities, they are less likely to commit crimes."

The NDA Commandant, Maj.-Gen. John Ochai, praised the lecture, calling it an "eye-opener" on the need for both education and practical skills. He encouraged everyone to see skill acquisition as a responsibility for personal and national development.
