Former Abia State Governor and Senator, Orji Kalu, has called on President Bola Tinubu to take quick action to address the growing economic challenges in Nigeria.
Speaking at a press briefing at the National Assembly on Tuesday, Kalu expressed concern about the increasing difficulties Nigerians are facing, especially after recent economic reforms.
He acknowledged that removing the fuel subsidy was a bold decision by Tinubu, but urged the president to reconsider its impact on the people. "The hardship is real; people are suffering," Kalu said, adding that it has become harder for businesses, including his, to pay workers.
Kalu explained that maintaining a private plane now costs between $10,000 and $20,000, which has forced him to ask senior staff to fly commercially in order to save money and support workers in Nigeria and West Africa. “Everyone must be able to eat during this time of hardship,” he said.
While praising Tinubu’s courage in making economic reforms, Kalu stressed the need for faster relief measures. "No president in the last 60 years has dared to make such bold reforms," he said, "but the president must act now, not later, to ease the suffering."
He also suggested that bringing back the fuel subsidy could be discussed by Tinubu and his economic team.
Kalu addressed rumors about his death, clarifying that he had taken time off for academic purposes, not for health reasons. "I didn’t die, I was studying a course on democracy and the economy," he explained.
