The Federal Government has urged private sector recruitment agencies to follow the new N70,000 minimum wage, warning that violations will not be tolerated.
Alhaji Ismaila Abubakar, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, emphasized that this new wage is vital to address the economic challenges in Nigeria. He stated that no worker, whether in government or private employment, should earn less than N70,000.
Abubakar, represented by the Director of Employment and Wages, John Nyamali, spoke at the 13th Annual General Meeting of the Employers Association for Private Employment Agencies of Nigeria in Lagos. He said, “The minimum wage is now a law, and any employer who pays less than N70,000 will be committing a crime. Private employment agencies must ensure their workers are paid at least N70,000 after deductions.”
The President of the Employers Association, Dr. Olufemi Ogunlowo, asked the government to clarify whether the N70,000 wage is net or gross, and reaffirmed the association’s commitment to the minimum wage.
The Lagos Chairperson of the Nigerian Labour Congress, Funmilayo Sessi, highlighted that current economic difficulties make even the N70,000 wage insufficient, and urged employers to comply with the new minimum.
