The Anambra State Government has promised to find and arrest those responsible for the cult-related killings in Nibo, a community in Awka South Local Government Area, on Sunday.
The attack happened near the site of the community's New Yam festival, known as the 'Nibo Onwa Asaa' festival, when suspected cult members arrived in a Lexus 300 jeep and opened fire. They killed eight people instantly and later caused more deaths at another location, bringing the total number of victims to at least 13.
In response, the state's Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, issued a statement on Monday. He confirmed that the government is aware of the killings and has started taking action to capture the attackers. He reassured the public that the government is committed to ending cult-related violence in the state.
Mefor expressed condolences to the families of the victims and urged anyone with information about the attackers to come forward. He assured that any helpful information will be kept confidential and rewarded.
He also encouraged residents to continue their daily activities without fear, as the government is working with security agencies to resolve the situation. Hotlines will soon be made available for the public to share any information.
