FIFA Bans Samuel Eto'o from Matches for Six Months Due to Misconduct

Samuel Eto'o

Samuel Eto'o, the president of the Cameroon Football Association (FECAFOOT), has received a six-month ban from attending any international matches involving Cameroon.

FIFA announced the sanction in a statement on Monday, citing violations of its disciplinary code. The ban is linked to Eto'o's behavior during the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup round-of-16 match between Brazil and Cameroon, which took place on September 11, 2024, in Bogotá, Colombia.

Eto'o was found guilty of "offensive behaviour and violations of the principles of fair play," as well as "misconduct of players and officials" during the match. Tensions flared when Brazil was awarded a controversial penalty, leading to an eventual 3-1 victory for Brazil, which left the Cameroonian delegation in a state of outrage.

Since assuming the role of FECAFOOT president in 2021, Eto'o has faced several controversies. In July, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) fined him $200,000 for breaching ethical standards by signing a brand ambassador contract with 1XBET for personal remuneration.

Additionally, in 2022, Eto'o made headlines for an altercation with a cameraman outside a stadium during the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. A year later, CAF launched an investigation into allegations of improper conduct against him, prompted by complaints from various stakeholders in Cameroonian football.
