Joint Statement by German Foreign Minister and U.S. Secretary of State on Yahya Sinwar

Antony Blinken and German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock

On October 18, 2024, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock issued a joint statement after their meeting in Berlin regarding the death of Yahya Sinwar, a prominent figure in the Gaza conflict.

They described Sinwar as a dangerous terrorist responsible for the October 7 attacks that caused widespread death and suffering. Sinwar was known for his opposition to peace efforts and was seen as an obstacle to a ceasefire in Gaza.

His death, the ministers stated, could provide an opportunity to end the ongoing conflict. Both leaders emphasized the urgent need for the release of all hostages and stressed the importance of increasing humanitarian aid to the civilians of Gaza.

Germany and the United States, alongside their international partners, are committed to working together to ensure peace and stability in the region. They pledged to continue their efforts to bring about a resolution to the conflict while addressing the needs of those affected by the violence
