Man Who Demanded Tinubu’s Resignation Sent to Psychiatric Hospital

The Adamawa State Police Command has confirmed that Abdullahi Mohammed, a 30-year-old man who climbed a high-voltage electricity pole demanding President Bola Tinubu’s resignation, has been admitted to the Yola Psychiatric Hospital for a mental health evaluation.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Nguroje, stated in an interview with Arewa PUNCH on Friday that Mohammed is currently undergoing psychiatric tests at the facility within the specialist hospital premises in Yola.

Nguroje explained that when the police in Mayo-Belwa rescued Mohammed from the 33kv high tension electricity pole, they found hard drugs on him, including green leaves that he admitted were Indian hemp.

The police spokesperson added, "The suspect confessed that he takes Indian hemp and other hard drugs. Due to his unusual behavior, we had to take him to the psychiatric hospital for a detailed medical examination. We are still waiting for the medical report before proceeding further."

Last Saturday night, the Adamawa Police Command successfully rescued and detained Mohammed, who had climbed the high tension pole in Mayo-Belwa Local Government Area, declaring that he would only come down if President Tinubu resigned.

Nguroje explained that attempting suicide is a criminal offense under Nigerian law and stated that the police would charge Mohammed in court once the medical examination is completed. He emphasized that it is the police’s responsibility to protect lives, and those who attempt to take their own lives will face the law.

The incident, which occurred on a market day, attracted attention as Mohammed climbed the pole along the Yola-Jalingo highway, refusing to come down unless his demand for the President to vacate office was met. Local residents eventually helped to persuade him to come down on Saturday night.

Mohammed, who is from Gashaka town in Taraba State, is now in custody pending the outcome of his medical assessment.
