The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has retracted a press statement it previously released concerning the satellite internet service provider, Starlink.

In a message sent to media outlets on Tuesday, the NCC acknowledged that the statement was issued mistakenly and requested that editors and journalists remove any related publications.

The message, signed by Kunle Azeez, the NCC’s Manager of Media Relations, read, “Please note that the press statement on Starlink was issued in error. It is hereby withdrawn. If already published, kindly take it down.”

Earlier, Reuben Muoka, the NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, announced plans to take enforcement actions against Starlink for increasing its subscription prices in Nigeria without regulatory approval.

Starlink recently informed its customers that the monthly subscription fee would rise by 97%, from N38,000 to N75,000. Additionally, the cost of the Starlink kit for new users was increased to N590,000, a 34% jump from the previous price of N440,000.

The NCC initially claimed that it had not approved these price changes and expressed surprise at the announcement, given that Starlink had submitted a request for a price adjustment, which was still pending approval.

However, with the withdrawal of the press statement, the NCC has not provided further clarification on its stance regarding the issue.
