The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has expressed deep sorrow over a tragic helicopter crash that took the lives of eight oil workers, including two union leaders.
In a statement signed by NUPENG President Prince Williams Akporeha and General Secretary Afolabi Olawale, the union extended its condolences to the families of the victims, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), and Arion Energy Services Ltd. NUPENG stated that the crash is a heavy loss for both the oil and gas industry and its workers.
The Eastwind Aviation helicopter, carrying the eight individuals, crashed into the Bonny River on October 24, 2024, while traveling from Port Harcourt Military Base to the offshore facility FPSO NUIM ANTAN.
Among those lost were Comrade Boris Dorbi, NUPENG Branch Chairman, and Comrade Lawrence Alu, a respected member of the NUIM Antan Branch. "Their untimely deaths are a huge loss to the industry and our workforce," the statement read.
NUPENG praised the recovery efforts by the Rivers and Akwa Ibom State governments, the Federal Ministry of Aviation, and other agencies. "As we mourn our fallen comrades, we stand together in grief, sending our prayers and condolences to the families affected," NUPENG stated.
The union also reaffirmed its dedication to working with stakeholders to improve safety for its members and the community. "May the departed rest in peace, and may their families find the strength to bear these losses," the statement concluded.
