Senate Holds Emergency Closed-Door Session on Local Government Autonomy

Nigerian Senate

Today, Senator Tony Nwoye raised an urgent issue in the Senate, highlighting concerns over state governments using their State Houses of Assembly to create laws that violate the constitution and a Supreme Court ruling on financial autonomy for local governments.

Nwoye, along with 12 other senators, alleged that some state governments are trying to block the implementation of local government autonomy by passing new laws. These laws reportedly require local governments to send most of their funds to state-controlled accounts, despite the Supreme Court ruling against such practices.

The Senate President, Godswil Akpabio, was approached by several senators for consultation, which led to an emergency closed-door session to discuss the matter further.
