Starlink, the satellite internet service by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, has paused its planned price increase for Nigerian users. On Thursday, Starlink informed subscribers that it would hold off on the new rates while it works through regulatory concerns.
The company, now Nigeria’s third-largest internet provider with 24 million users, assured customers who had already paid the higher rate that they would receive a credit. It also reminded users that they could cancel their subscriptions if needed.
Last month, Starlink raised its monthly subscription fee from N38,000 to N75,000 to adjust for inflation. However, the price hike drew complaints from customers due to the high cost. Starlink also raised the price of its installation kit for new customers from N440,000 to N590,000.
Starlink explained that it remains committed to providing reliable high-speed internet in Nigeria but needs regulatory support to continue service improvements. Without these approvals, the company said its ability to deliver services could be at risk.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) withdrew a statement it had issued regarding Starlink’s operations, asking media outlets to take down any reports on it. Mobile operators in Nigeria, represented by the Association of Licensed Telecommunication Companies of Nigeria, also criticized Starlink’s actions, calling it a “regulatory affront.”
