On November 1, 2024, the Biden-Harris Administration announced that Sunnyvale, California, is expected to be the location for a new CHIPS for America Design and Collaboration Facility (DCF). This facility will be part of the National Semiconductor Technology Center (NSTC) and will play a crucial role in advancing semiconductor research, workforce development, and collaboration.
The DCF will focus on semiconductor design research, electronic design automation, chip and system architecture, and hardware security. It will also host various programs, including the NSTC Workforce Center of Excellence and the Design Enablement Gateway. The facility aims to bring together industry leaders, academia, investors, and government partners to address the challenges facing the semiconductor industry.
Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo emphasized the importance of this facility for national security and maintaining the U.S.'s technological competitiveness. She highlighted that the CHIPS for America initiative, part of President Biden's Investing in America agenda, aims to strengthen the U.S. semiconductor supply chain, accelerate research and development, and create quality jobs across the country.
National Economic Advisor Lael Brainard stated that this designation will establish Sunnyvale as a premier location for semiconductor research and development. The facility will be located in Silicon Valley, surrounded by established companies, innovative startups, leading research institutions, and investors.
The DCF will provide access to cutting-edge research tools and workforce opportunities, helping to secure America's leadership in global semiconductor technology and manufacturing. It will also offer valuable physical and digital assets to develop next-generation semiconductor technologies for applications like AI and 5G.
The Department of Commerce and Natcast, the operator of the NSTC, expect to announce more details about the selection process for affiliated technical centers in the future.
