Ebonyi Governor Suspends Health and Housing Commissioners Over Misconduct

Governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Nwifuru

The Governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Nwifuru, has finally wielded the big stick on two close cabinet members. The Commissioner for Health, Dr Moses Ekuma, was handed a three-month suspension while the Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Francis Ori, is under indefinite suspension.

The decision was taken in a State Executive Council meeting held on Monday in Abakaliki, the state capital. According to a statement by the Commissioner for Information and State Orientation Jude Okpor, "gross misconduct and dereliction of duties" were stated as the reasons for suspending these teachers.

Reports say the suspension of the Health Ministry follows allegations of theft involving government property. Six officials were reportedly caught diverting materials during a surprise visit by Governor Nwifuru to the ministry on Saturday night.

Poor performance, including mismanagement of the Amaeze Housing Scheme in Ishielu Local Government Area, was cited for the indefinite suspension of the commissioner for Housing and Urban Development.

The government has constituted an investigative panel, and the arrested officials are heading to court for prosecution.
