Washington D.C.- Today, on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, USAID Administrator Samantha Power has reaffirmed the United States' commitment to addressing this global crisis.
Power highlighted the alarming statistics on gender-based violence, including the disproportionate impact on women and girls in times of conflicts and humanitarian crises. The time to act and take immediate measures in the prevention and response to violence against women and girls is now, she said.
To address this problem, the Government of the United States has increased financing for gender-based violence programs by threefold, focusing on prevention, protection, and prosecution. This involves investments in survivor services, women's empowerment, and root causes such as harmful social norms.
In addition, USAID is considering how technology can be a multiplier on fighting gender-based violence in the digital age. Thanks to programs such as Women LEAD, the agency is putting women at the front of safely and responsibly using digital tools and promoting their rights online.
As the 16 Days of Activism campaign gets underway, USAID urges the international community to join the movement against gender-based violence. Together, we can help create a safer and more equal world for everyone.
