In a heartwarming ceremony held on Sunday, the Assemblies of God Church (Covenant Center) at 91 Nelson Mandela, Calabar, Cross River State, celebrated the retirement of Rev. Joseph Okuta Ajor and his wife, Pastor Mrs. Amarachi Ajor.

The couple served the church faithfully for nine years before Rev. Ajor’s retirement, marking the end of an impactful pastoral career spanning decades.

The event, chaired by Mr. Godwin Aji, was a blend of emotions as the congregation gathered to honor Rev. Ajor’s steadfast commitment to the church and its community. Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Aji said, “It is with mixed feelings and celebration that we gather here today to bid farewell to our beloved Rev. Prof. Joseph Okuta Ajor and his dear wife, Pastor Mrs. Amarachi Ajor. His unwavering commitment and unrelenting passion for God’s work have left an indelible mark on all our lives.”

Reflecting on Rev. Ajor’s impact, Aji shared a personal story, saying, “Without Rev. Ajor, I wouldn’t have the wife I have today, because she was a pioneer member of the Satellite Church. His wisdom and dedication have helped shape our church into the vibrant condition we enjoy today. I have never seen him angry—his selfless devotion, compassionate heart, and inspiring leadership have been a beacon of hope and guidance for us all. May God continue to bless and guide him as he embarks on this new chapter of his life.”

Rev. Ajor began his pastoral ministry in 1988 and has since pastored over eight churches across various districts within the Assemblies of God community. His leadership at the Nelson Mandela church, which began in 2015, was particularly celebrated for embodying Christ-centered leadership and fostering deeper unity within the congregation.

In a felicitation message signed by the church secretary, Deacon Prof. Dave Imbua, the church highlighted Rev. Ajor’s exemplary service. “Since assuming pastoral leadership of this assembly in 2015, Rev. Dr. Ajor has served with unwavering commitment, exemplary devotion, and a shepherd’s heart. Through his steadfast dedication, wise counsel, and inspiring leadership, our church has experienced deeper unity and an enriched understanding of God’s Word. He came to us as a servant, led us as a shepherd, and inspired us as a mentor,” the message read.

The Calabar South District of the Assemblies of God Church also paid tribute to Rev. Ajor in a goodwill message signed by the District Superintendent, Rev. Asuquo Edet. “Your life of servanthood and selfless service to God in all ramifications is evident in the tremendous achievements you have made throughout these years. The successes you have achieved in ministry are a testament to the fact that you are retiring as a fulfilled man of God who has completed his assignment,” said Edet.

In his remarks, Rev. Ajor expressed gratitude to the church and the community for their support throughout his ministry. “On behalf of my family, I want to say thank you to the District, the General Council, my Presbytery, our Nelson Mandela church, the Deacon board, and all the members. I have been honored to serve as pastor here for nine years. We are very happy and humbled by all you have done for us. May God bless you all with long life and prosperity,” he said.

The ceremony also featured an exhortation by the former Calabar District Superintendent, Rev. Isong Uyo Essiet, who drew inspiration from 2 Timothy 4:7: “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.” Rev. Essiet encouraged Rev. Ajor to remain active in ministry, saying, “Expect that God will move you to greater dimensions in the ministry, particularly through numerous crusade programs across near and far.”

Rev. Joseph Okuta Ajor’s retirement marks the conclusion of an illustrious pastoral career characterized by humility, dedication, and a genuine love for God and His people. His legacy will continue to inspire the church community as he transitions to a new chapter of service and fulfilment.
