ECOWAS Establishes Special Tribunal for The Gambia

Washington, D.C. – The United States welcomes the historic decision by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to establish a Special Tribunal for The Gambia. This tribunal will investigate and prosecute gross human rights violations and international crimes committed during the regime of former President Yahya Jammeh.

The establishment of this tribunal marks a significant step towards justice and accountability for the victims of the Jammeh regime. It demonstrates the commitment of ECOWAS and The Gambia to addressing past human rights abuses and building a future based on the principles of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.

The United States commends The Gambia for its courage in confronting its past and its commitment to a democratic future. We also applaud ECOWAS for its leadership in supporting The Gambia’s efforts to achieve justice and reconciliation.

The U.S. will continue to work closely with The Gambia and ECOWAS to ensure that the Special Tribunal is well-resourced and capable of delivering justice effectively. We believe that this tribunal can serve as a model for other countries in the region seeking to address past human rights abuses and promote transitional justice.
