Hoodlums Attack Kogi Monarch’s Palace, Burn Property

Suspected hoodlums attacked the palace of HRH Emmanuel Akamisoko Dauda-Shelika, Etsu Lokoja, early on Saturday morning. The attack happened around 1:00 AM, with the attackers setting fire to his car and other belongings. The monarch escaped by climbing over a fence.

The palace, located in New Layout, Lokoja, was preparing to host the second Nupe Cultural Fiesta on December 21, 2024. Many Nupe natives from neighboring states had already arrived, but the event was canceled due to the incident.

The monarch described the attack, explaining that he woke up to the sound of a loud bang and saw his car on fire. Afraid for his life, he fled through the back door. Neighbors tried to control the fire, but the car and other items were destroyed.

HRH Dauda-Shelika has urged the government and security agencies to investigate the attack and bring those responsible to justice. He called on the Nupe community to remain peaceful and avoid retaliation.

The monarch also appealed to the government to officially recognize the Etsu Lokoja traditional stool, which he said predates colonial times, as a way to prevent such conflicts in the future. He stressed the importance of fairness and inclusion for the Nupe people, who are early settlers in Lokoja.

The attack has drawn attention from local authorities, including the police and other security agencies, who visited the scene and condemned the violence. However, police and government officials have not yet provided an official statement on the matter.

The cultural event was intended to celebrate Nupe heritage and not a coronation ceremony, according to the organizers, who expressed disappointment over its cancellation. They urged the government to ensure justice and fairness for the Nupe community.
