Nigerian Air Force Airstrike Accidentally Kills Villagers in Sokoto

A Nigerian Air Force (NAF) airstrike intended to target Lakurawa terrorists mistakenly hit two communities in Silame Local Government Area of Sokoto State on Wednesday, resulting in the deaths of several residents.

Eyewitnesses reported that the accidental bombing claimed the lives of at least 10 villagers and left several others injured. The affected communities, Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa, are located near the Surame forest, a known hideout for the Lakurawa sect and bandits.

Malam Yahya, a resident of Silame, stated that the airstrike occurred around 7 am on Christmas Day, disrupting what should have been a peaceful holiday. He confirmed that no fewer than 10 villagers were killed, with several others sustaining injuries.

Abubakar Daftarana, Chairman of Silame Local Government Area, expressed shock at the devastation, noting that the villagers were innocent and peace-loving people. He mentioned that it was too early to confirm the exact number of casualties as assessments were still ongoing.

The Sokoto State Police Command declined to comment on the matter, stating that it was not their operation. Meanwhile, the Nigerian Air Force promised to investigate the incident. NAF spokesperson, Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa, stated that the operation was conducted based on credible intelligence and surveillance. He assured that the force would thoroughly investigate claims of civilian casualties.

Lieutenant Colonel Abubakar Abdullah, Coordinator of the Joint Media Coordination Centre for Operation Fansan Yamma, emphasized that military operations are conducted based on thorough intelligence and reconnaissance missions. He urged the public to rely on confirmed information to prevent misinformation and unnecessary panic.

The Joint Task Force North West Operation Fansan Yamma confirmed that the targets struck in the vicinity of Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa were associated with the Lakurawa group, reinforcing the justification for the military action taken.
