The Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police Force, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, has warned against using abusive and harmful language toward people online. He explained that this act is cyberbullying, which is illegal and punishable by law.
In a post on X.com (formerly Twitter) on Friday, Adejobi clarified that attacking someone with harsh words online is not an exercise of free speech or criticism.
He wrote, "Raining direct curses on someone online is cyberbullying, not freedom of expression or criticism. Cyberbullying is a criminal offence and punishable. Be guided."
Reacting to the post, Felix Abayomi, tweeting as #felabayomi, asked, "When did cursing become a crime? I can’t wait for someone to challenge these laws."
Another user, tweeting anonymously as #kingkhone4real, joked, "If that’s true, then every Nigerian would be in jail by now."
However, #omoopee_ supported Adejobi, saying, "You’re absolutely right, sir. Cyberbullying, including cursing, isn’t freedom of expression—it’s harmful behavior. We must learn to express ourselves responsibly."
