Reps to Return N704m to Tinubu After 50% Salary Cut

Tajudeen Abbas

On December 31, 2024, the House of Representatives will give N704.91 million to President Bola Tinubu to help vulnerable Nigerians. This is part of efforts to ease the economic hardship caused by removing the petrol subsidy.

On July 18, lawmakers decided to cut their salaries by 50% for six months and give the money to poor Nigerians. Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, announced that they had collected N704.9 million to donate.

Abbas said, "Five months ago, we decided to contribute half of our salaries to help Nigerians. We have collected N704,907,578.82. On December 31, I will lead a delegation to hand over the money to the President for vulnerable Nigerians."

The decision came from a motion by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu in July. Kalu urged his colleagues to sacrifice 50% of their salary for six months to address hunger and economic difficulties. He said, "Our salary is N600,000 a month. Let's give up 50% of it for this period."
