U.S. Condemns Hong Kong Government’s Actions Against Overseas Activists

The United States has strongly criticized the Hong Kong government for its continued efforts to suppress pro-democracy activists abroad. In a press statement issued on December 26, 2024, the U.S. condemned the issuance of new arrest warrants and bounties targeting six overseas activists, as well as the cancellation of passports for seven others, some of whom are based in the United States.

The U.S. government expressed firm opposition to these actions, calling them attempts to intimidate and silence individuals exercising their right to freedom of expression. “The United States does not waver in its advocacy for those who are targeted simply for exercising their right to freedom of expression,” the statement declared.

Transnational Repression Criticized

The U.S. labeled the Hong Kong government’s use of national security laws beyond its borders as “transnational repression.” This practice, the statement noted, undermines U.S. sovereignty and violates the human rights and freedoms of people worldwide.

“These actions demonstrate Hong Kong authorities’ disregard for international norms and for the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly,” the statement added, emphasizing that such measures threaten the foundational principles of democratic societies.

Call to End Suppression

The United States has urged Hong Kong to cease using its national security laws as a tool to stifle dissent. Washington has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting those targeted by these laws and has reiterated its advocacy for fundamental freedoms, including free speech and peaceful protest.

Background

Since the implementation of Hong Kong’s national security law in 2020, the government has intensified its crackdown on pro-democracy voices, both domestically and internationally. Activists residing abroad have faced threats, including legal action, extradition attempts, and the revocation of travel documents.

The latest actions come amid growing international concern over Hong Kong’s erosion of freedoms, with many countries condemning what they describe as an attack on democratic principles.

Global Reactions

Human rights groups and global leaders have expressed solidarity with the targeted activists, calling on the international community to hold Hong Kong accountable for its actions. Many have criticized the broader implications of Hong Kong’s crackdown, warning it sets a dangerous precedent for suppressing dissent across borders.

As the situation unfolds, the U.S. and other nations are expected to continue pressing Hong Kong to respect international norms and uphold the rights of all individuals, regardless of their location.
