Chasing Goals Amid Criticism: A Tale of Two Men at a Dump Site

By Oluchi Omai

One morning, I passed by two men arguing at a refuse dump, which made me curious. Why would two grown men quarrel in such a place, if they even had to quarrel at all?

One of the men was inside the bin, while the other stood outside. I moved closer and listened to their conversation.

“Why did you call me a madman?” asked the man inside the bin. “Aren’t you also picking from the refuse dump? That makes you mad too!”

“I’m not mad because I’m not inside the bin,” replied the man outside. “I only pick what I find useful, but you’re digging through the bin like the madman you are.”

The second man claimed he was sane but still walked away with an item he had taken from the dump.

Later, on my way back, I saw the first man again, this time with a loaded bag. He had left the bin and the dump site, his bag filled with items.

This encounter taught me a few lessons:

  1. Guilty people often point fingers at others to distract from their own actions.
  2. Everyone has their own interests, but not everyone is willing to ignore insults or embarrassment to pursue them.

Both men were scavenging, but the first thought it was madness to get fully inside the bin, so he stayed at the edge. Meanwhile, the second man, determined to fill his bag, ignored others' opinions and went all in.

Life works the same way: "Greatness is remembered by the results, not the process, though the process shapes the results."

Never let someone’s opinion stop you from pursuing your goals. Many critics secretly want what you’re after but lack the courage to go for it. Ignore the noise, focus on your purpose, and chase your dreams!
