DHS Extends Temporary Protected Status for Sudan by 18 Months Amid Ongoing Crisis

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced an 18-month extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Sudan, extending coverage from April 20, 2025, to October 19, 2026. This decision reflects ongoing armed conflict and extraordinary conditions in Sudan that make it unsafe for individuals to return.

Approximately 1,900 current beneficiaries of TPS for Sudan must re-register between January 17, 2025, and March 18, 2025, to retain their status and employment authorization. This extension is based on continued political instability and widespread human rights abuses, including direct attacks on civilians.

DHS noted that all applicants undergo rigorous national security and public safety vetting during initial application and re-registration processes. Those deemed a threat may face removal or further investigation. Individuals with felony convictions or multiple misdemeanors remain ineligible for TPS.

To address delays in processing new Employment Authorization Documents (EADs), DHS has automatically extended the validity of certain existing EADs through April 19, 2026. Beneficiaries can use EADs with specific expiration dates as proof of continued work authorization, including those with prior expiration dates of April 19, 2025, and earlier.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will continue processing pending applications under previous TPS designations for Sudan. Applicants with pending Form I-821 or Form I-765 applications as of January 17, 2025, do not need to reapply. Approved cases will receive TPS and EADs valid through October 19, 2026.

The Federal Register notice provides detailed eligibility criteria, timelines, and re-registration procedures.

This extension applies only to individuals already in the United States under Sudan’s TPS designation. DHS reiterated that irregular migration remains dangerous and unlawful, warning against attempts to enter the U.S. without a legal basis. Enforcement measures will continue for noncitizens who do not qualify to remain in the country.

TPS beneficiaries are encouraged to review the Federal Register notice for further details on re-registration and EAD renewal.
