NCC to Address Tariff Hike Issues in Thursday Meeting with Consumer Groups

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has arranged a meeting in Abuja on Thursday to discuss the proposed 100% increase in telecom tariffs. Representatives from major consumer advocacy groups and other stakeholders will come together to discuss the effects of this price hike.

Adeolu Ogungbanjo, President of the National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers and a critic of the proposal, confirmed that he was invited to the meeting scheduled for Thursday at 2 pm.

Telecom operators have asked the NCC to approve a 100% increase in tariffs to cover rising operational costs like fuel and the falling value of the naira. The NCC has yet to decide on this proposal.

Consumer rights groups, including the National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers (NATCOMS), are worried that the increase could worsen the financial burden on Nigerians. Sola Ajulo, President of the Consumer Advocacy Foundation of Nigeria, emphasized on Arise TV that these discussions are crucial for determining the future of telecom pricing in Nigeria.

Ajulo noted that while a price increase might be necessary due to economic challenges, it is important to ensure that the terms are fair and consider the welfare of consumers. She suggested that a gradual increase with clear conditions might be a more reasonable approach.

It was previously reported that mobile operators plan to use the revenue from the proposed tariff increase to upgrade network infrastructure and service quality. The NCC will oversee these investments to ensure compliance.
