Second Trump Administration: Priorities of the New State Department

Marco Rubio

Press Statement - January 22, 2025

The new Secretary of State, Marco Rubio has outlined key priorities for the Department of State under President Trump’s administration, focusing on America’s national interests. The mission will center on three main goals:

Making America safer

Making America stronger

Making America more prosperous

To achieve this, the State Department will implement changes, including replacing old priorities, reducing focus on certain issues, and ending some practices.

Key Focus Areas

1. Border Security and Migration:

The State Department will no longer support activities that encourage mass migration. Diplomatic efforts, especially in the Western Hemisphere, will focus on securing U.S. borders, stopping illegal migration, and negotiating the return of illegal immigrants.

2. Rewarding Merit:

The administration will prioritize performance within the department, following an executive order from President Trump that removes diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) programs.

3. Practical Diplomacy:

The focus will return to traditional diplomacy, moving away from political and cultural issues that are divisive domestically and unpopular internationally.

4. Free Speech Protection:

The department will end any programs that suppress Americans’ free speech while countering false propaganda from adversaries. Efforts will focus on truth, promoting America as a strong and fair nation.

5. Energy Independence and Climate Policies:

Environmental protection will remain important, but the department will support President Trump’s goal of restoring America’s energy dominance, reducing emphasis on policies that may weaken the country.

The Secretary of State emphasized the need for an agile and focused approach to diplomacy, empowering the State Department to address global challenges and advancing America’s safety, strength, and prosperity.
