WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has extended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Venezuelans for 18 months. The new extension starts on April 3, 2025, and ends on October 2, 2026. This decision was made due to the difficult situation in Venezuela, which makes it unsafe for people to return.
The extension affects about 607,000 Venezuelans already under TPS. To keep their status and work authorization, these individuals must re-register between January 17, 2025, and September 10, 2025. Those who miss this deadline risk losing their protections.
DHS stated that all applicants go through strict security checks during the original application and re-registration. People with certain criminal records, including a felony or two misdemeanors, are not eligible for TPS.
The extension also automatically renews some work permits (EADs) through April 2, 2026. Eligible individuals can show their current EADs with specific expiration dates as proof of continued work authorization.
People with pending TPS or work permit applications do not need to reapply. If approved, their status and work permits will be valid until October 2, 2026.
This TPS extension only applies to Venezuelans already in the United States. DHS warned against dangerous and illegal migration routes, emphasizing that U.S. laws will be enforced, and people without legal status will be returned to their home countries.
More details on eligibility, re-registration, and work permit renewals are available in the Federal Register notice.
