Former NHIS Boss, Usman Yusuf, Sent to Kuje Prison Over Alleged ₦90m Fraud

A High Court in Abuja has ordered that Usman Yusuf, former head of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), be kept in Kuje Prison.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had earlier taken Yusuf to court, accusing him of corruption. He faced five charges related to fraud and embezzlement involving ₦90,439,178.

After he pleaded in court, his lawyer, O.I. Habeeb, asked that he remain in EFCC custody until his bail request is heard. However, the judge, Chinyere E. Nwecheonwu, rejected the request, stating that once a person is charged, they must be sent to the Nigerian Correctional Service.

The court then ordered his detention at Kuje Prison and set February 12, 2025, for the hearing of his bail request.
