In a bid to refine Nigeria’s tax system and promote economic sustainability, the House of Representatives has announced a public hearing on four key Tax Reform Bills currently at the Committee Stage. The hearing is scheduled to take place from Wednesday, February 26, to Friday, February 28, 2025, at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.
According to a statement released by the House Spokesman, Rep. Akin Rotimi, Jr., the hearing will be held at Conference Halls 028 and 231 in the House of Representatives New Building, commencing daily at 12:00 noon. The event will bring together key stakeholders, including government agencies, business leaders, tax experts, representatives from the private sector, and civil society organizations. The goal is to foster robust discussions and gather recommendations to ensure a fair and efficient tax regime in the country.
Recognizing the critical role of these bills in shaping Nigeria’s fiscal landscape, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, PhD, GCON, has constituted a Special Committee to oversee the legislative process. The Committee, chaired by Rep. James Faleke, includes members of the House Committee on Finance, as well as co-opted lawmakers from all states of the Federation, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and the six geo-political zones. This structure aims to ensure inclusive representation and thorough deliberation on the proposed reforms.
The House of Representatives urges all stakeholders to actively participate in the public hearing, emphasizing that the proposed reforms seek to align Nigeria’s tax policies with global best practices while supporting economic growth and stability.
