The Private Telecommunications and Communications Senior Staff Association of Nigeria has praised the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for suspending its planned protest against the 50% increase in telecom tariffs.
The union’s Secretary-General, Mr. Abdullahi Okonu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the association supports the tariff increase because the cost of running telecom services has risen.
Okonu explained that without the increase, telecom companies might struggle, leading to job losses.
“If companies cannot cover costs, they will try to cut expenses, which often means laying off workers. We don’t want that,” he said.
He also warned that if the telecom sector collapses, it would negatively affect other industries.
Meanwhile, Mrs. Funmi Sessi, Chairman of NLC Lagos State Council, said the union had already mobilized for the protest but suspended it after a meeting with the Federal Government.
She urged the government to find a way to reduce the tariff hike and ease the financial burden on Nigerians.
NLC has now agreed to negotiate with the Federal Government and hopes to resolve the issue within two weeks.
