Hope Waddell Training Institution (HOWAD), one of Calabar's oldest educational establishments founded in 1895, is set to celebrate its 130th anniversary with a week-long series of events dedicated to honoring its rich legacy and contributions to education in Nigeria.
The grand event is set to take place from March 3 to March 8, 2025, highlighting the institution's rich history and contributions to education in Nigeria.
The theme for this significant milestone is "Hope Waddell at 130: A Glorious Heritage Inspiring the Future." Organizers aim to engage both the local community and alumni in celebrating the institution's legacy and vision for the future.
Activities planned for the week will include various academic, cultural, and social events that showcase Hope Waddell's enduring impact.
At a World Press Conference held on Monday at the Hope Waddell Hall, the Chairman of the Central Planning Committee, Sir Toni Ekpeme, described the celebration, of the 130 years as a historic moment for the institution.
He expressed enthusiasm for commemorating the school's past while focusing on its future aspirations.
With a strong emphasis on heritage and inspiration, the 130th anniversary festivities are expected to draw attention from stakeholders, alumni, and the public, reinforcing Hope Waddell Training Institution’s enduring legacy in shaping the educational landscape of Nigeria.
"Hope Waddell is more than a school; the school is older than Nigeria, it is a symbol of excellence, a citadel of learning. This celebration will showcase our rich heritage and inspire future generations," he stated.
Founded in 1895, Hope Waddell Training Institution holds a distinguished place in Nigeria’s educational history.
"While the first four schools in the country were established in Lagos, Hope Waddell was the first school built east of the Niger, Hope Waddell is older than Nigeria itself," Ekpeme noted.
The week-long festivities will feature a variety of activities. On the first day, there will be a football match, and a visit to homes for the less privileged.
Tuesday will host the school’s inter-house sports competition. Wednesday will see a female football tournament sponsored by Her Excellency, Bishop Eyoanwan Bassey Otu, wife of the state Governor, and a distinguished alumna.
Thursday’s highlight will be a grand carnival led by the Presbyterian Church, with performances by the Naval Band and the Brass Band.
Friday’s schedule includes the Annual General Meeting (AGM) and the election of the institution’s National Executive Council, followed by a colloquium.
A major highlight of the anniversary will be the launch of a One Billion Naira Endowment Fund, and a Dinner Night on Saturday. On Sunday, there would be a Thanksgiving anniversary to be held at the School Parish.
The National President of the Alumni Association, Chief Efio-Ita Ephraim, stated that the N1Billion Naira endowment fund is the initiative of the Alumni.
He said "The funds raised will be used to equip the institution with modern teaching and laboratory facilities to maintain its legacy of academic excellence," he stated.
In his remarks, Most Rev. Daniel Etim, representative of the Prelate of the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, Most Rev. Dr. Ekpenyong Akpanika reaffirmed the church’s support.
"Hope Waddell remains a citadel of learning. We stand firmly behind its vision and mission," he declared.
