Washington, D.C. – Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Advisor (NSA) Waltz have released a statement regarding a phone call between President Donald J. Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
During the conversation, President Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to President Trump for the ongoing cooperation between the United States and Ukraine. He highlighted the productive discussions held by both nations' teams in Jeddah on March 11, which have contributed to efforts to end the war.
President Zelenskyy specifically thanked President Trump for the U.S. support, particularly the provision of Javelin missiles, and for his leadership in seeking peace. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to working together to bring the war to a conclusion under President Trump’s leadership.
President Trump provided President Zelenskyy with details of his recent conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, including key issues discussed. The two leaders reviewed the situation in Kursk and agreed to strengthen communication between their defense teams as battlefield conditions evolved. President Zelenskyy also requested additional air defense systems, including Patriot missile systems, to protect Ukrainian civilians. President Trump agreed to explore available options, particularly from European sources.
The leaders also discussed a partial ceasefire agreement related to energy. Technical teams from both sides will meet in Saudi Arabia in the coming days to explore expanding the ceasefire to the Black Sea as part of broader efforts to secure lasting peace. President Zelenskyy welcomed President Trump’s leadership in this initiative and expressed willingness to support a full ceasefire.
Additionally, President Trump addressed concerns about Ukraine’s electricity supply and nuclear power plants. He stated that the U.S. could offer significant expertise in managing these facilities and suggested that American involvement in Ukraine’s energy infrastructure could provide long-term stability.
The discussion also covered humanitarian issues, including the exchange of prisoners of war. President Zelenskyy acknowledged a recent successful exchange and thanked President Trump for his efforts. The U.S. President also raised concerns about Ukrainian children who had gone missing or were abducted during the war, pledging to work closely with all parties to ensure their safe return.
Both leaders agreed that all parties must remain committed to making the ceasefire work. They praised the contributions of their advisors, including Secretary Rubio, NSA Waltz, and Special Envoy Kellogg. President Trump and President Zelenskyy directed their teams to expedite discussions on technical matters related to implementing and expanding the ceasefire. They emphasized that further meetings should focus on advancing toward a comprehensive and lasting peace.
