Lagos, April 6, 2025 — At least 15 people sustained various degrees of injuries on Sunday following a gas explosion in the Ijora Badia area of Apapa Iganmu Local Council Development Area, Lagos State.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the incident, which occurred at approximately 4:10 p.m., originated from a mini gas retail shop containing five 25kg gas cylinders.
In a statement released on Sunday, the Director of the Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, said the explosion was triggered by a gas leak that ignited due to poor handling and the presence of a nearby flame.
“It was a case of poor handling of gas products, which unfortunately allowed gas to escape and come in contact with a flame. This triggered the explosion,” Adeseye said.
The affected shop was situated within a bungalow that housed 15 self-contained rooms and seven additional shops. The resulting fire was swiftly contained, and the remaining gas cylinders were removed to prevent further danger.
Adeseye confirmed that 15 individuals suffered burn-related injuries. No fatalities were recorded, and none of the injuries were reported to be life-threatening.
Emergency responders provided first aid to some victims at the scene, while others were transported to nearby hospitals for further treatment.
The fire was extinguished through the combined efforts of firefighters from the Sari Iganmu Fire Station, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, and the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS).
The incident comes just weeks after a similar explosion on the Otedola Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in March, which claimed five lives.
