On the evening of Thursday, April 3, 2025, a tragic accident occurred along Marian Road near the Federal Pay Office in Calabar, Cross River State.
At approximately 8 PM, a refuse truck experienced a mechanical failure, prompting a local mechanic to attempt repairs. While he was working beneath the vehicle, the hydraulic jack supporting the truck failed, causing the heavy vehicle to collapse on him.
The mechanic was promptly transported to a nearby hospital, but medical personnel confirmed his death upon arrival.​
Engineer Samuel Ekanem commented on the incident, emphasizing the importance of proper safety measures when lifting heavy vehicles. He noted that hydraulic jacks are designed to support the weight of the vehicle alone, not additional loads such as a full refuse bin.
Ekanem advised that trucks should be unloaded before attempting repairs that require lifting, to prevent similar accidents.
