U.S. Expands Visa Restrictions on Nicaraguan Officials Amid Ongoing Repression

April 18, 2025 | Washington, D.C. — The United States has announced the imposition of visa restrictions on over 250 officials of the Nicaraguan government under President Daniel Ortega and Vice President Rosario Murillo. This action brings the total number of Nicaraguan officials facing U.S. visa restrictions to more than 2,000, reflecting ongoing concerns about human rights abuses and the erosion of democratic institutions in Nicaragua.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized the U.S. commitment to holding the Ortega-Murillo regime accountable for its continued assault on fundamental freedoms. "The United States will not stand for Ortega and Murillo’s continued assault on Nicaragua," Rubio stated.

The Ortega-Murillo administration has been widely criticized for its authoritarian practices, including the suppression of political dissent, control over the judiciary, and the targeting of civil society organizations. Since the 2018 crackdown on anti-government protests, which resulted in over 350 deaths, the regime has intensified its repression, leading to the exile of many Nicaraguans and the closure of numerous NGOs and independent media outlets.

In addition to visa restrictions, the U.S. has previously imposed sanctions on Nicaraguan entities and officials, citing concerns over human rights violations and the facilitation of irregular migration. These measures aim to pressure the Nicaraguan government to cease its repressive actions and engage in democratic reforms.

The international community continues to monitor the situation in Nicaragua, with human rights organizations calling for the release of political prisoners and the restoration of democratic norms. The U.S. government has reiterated its support for the Nicaraguan people's aspirations for freedom and democracy.
